Dr Christopher Townsley is the Head of the Project Office Division within the STFC Particle Physics Department (PPD). A Chartered Project Professional (ChPP) and Chartered Physicist, he provides leadership and management to major research infrastructure, uniquely combining high-level scientific expertise with heavy commercial sector experience gained whilst at global engineering consultancy Mott MacDonald.His extensive background features a standout past role as Programme Director for the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA)—the world’s next-generation ground-based gamma-ray observatory. This follows his time as a condensed matter physics researcher at the University of Oxford, his work on the CryoEDM neutron electric dipole moment experiment, and his contributions to the international NUSTAR nuclear structure collaboration. Christopher frequently serves on project review panels, focusing particularly on management and delivery aspects, and acts as an assessor and examiner for APM ChPP and other professional project management exams.
