Making a global impact

The Particle Physics Department’s (PPD) work drives discoveries that expand our understanding of the Universe and deliver real-world benefits. From probing fundamental particles and forces to advancing detector technology, computing, and instrumentation, our research supports UK scientists, inspires innovation, and contributes to society through education, collaboration, and technological development.

Boulby: expanding the frontier of underground science

From 2029, Boulby Underground Laboratory will expand with a 1.1 km-deep cavern and a proposed 1.3 km facility for the Dark Matter Observatory, creating a major underground science hub in North East England. The project will boost regional investment, skills, and STEM while advancing the missions of Science and Technology Facilities Council and UK Research and Innovation.
