SHORT-TERM: to verify that transverse cooling of a muon beam does, indeed, occur; and to confirm or improve the computer codes used to model the scattering of muons by nuclei.
LONG-TERM: to provide the basis of understanding for the future development of the injection stage of a muon-antimuon collider which could then provide precision measurements of the properties of, for example, the Higgs boson; or to create intense beams of muon-neutrinos and antineutrinos. Either of these could potentially discover a route to BSM (Beyond the Standard Model) physics.
