Wednesday 23 November 2016 Speaker: Dr Jaap Velthius (University of Bristol) Title: "Volcanoes and other things that go boom... applications of muon tomography” Abstract: Muon tomography is a novel imaging technology that allows imaging of the insides of closed objects without introducing radiation from a safe distance. This makes it an excellent technique to probe the internal structure of volcanoes, to detect nuclear bombs smuggled in cargo containers and monitor legacy nuclear waste. In this presentation I will discuss the detectors and analysis techniques and present results on the aforementioned topics.
