Wednesday 16 March 2016 Speaker: Craig Buttar (University of Glasgow) Title: "Is CMOS taking over HEP?" Abstract: CMOS based tracking detectors have been around for about 20 years. They are now approaching maturity with monolithic active pixel sensors (MAPS) deployed in the STAR experiment and the baseline for the ALICE tracker upgrade. Conventional MAPS have limitations that make the unsuitable for use in experiments with high rates and/or harsh radiation environments. The recent development of high voltage and high resistivity active CMOS sensors (HV and HR-CMOS) has the potential to overcome these limitations. This talk will describe the current MAPS sensors and the status of development of HV and HR-CMOS sensors, particularly for the tracker upgrade of ATLAS for the HL-LHC.
