Wednesday 21 March 2012 Speaker: Johannas Knapp (Leeds University) Title: "Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays and Recent Results from the Pierre Auger Observatory" Abstract: The Pierre Auger Observatory was built to explore the origin of ultra high energy cosmic rays (E > 10^18 eV).It uses two complementary techniques to record extensive air showers, measure their energy and arrival direction, and to determine the composition of the cosmic rays. The talk will present the open questions around the ultra high energy cosmic rays and the recent results achieved from the first 3 years of data taking with the completed Auger detector.
