Wednesday 7 December 2011 Speaker: James Holloway (University College, London) Title: “Charged Particle Driven Plasma Wakefield Acceleration” Abstract: Plasmas can support electric fields thousands of times greater than those achievable in conventional radio frequency accelerators. Plasma wakefield acceleration uses these electric fields to accelerate charged particles to high energies over short distances. A test experiment using the SPS beam at CERN to accelerate a witness electron beam is planned. The use of short proton bunches to induce a wakefield could be the route to a TeV-scale e+ e- collider of a few km in length. An experiment using the Diamond electron beam to demonstrate the micro-bunching of long drive beams and to develop diagnostics is considered.
