Wednesday 27 July 2011 Speaker: Chris Damerell (RAL/PPD) Title: “Report back from Vertex 2011 Workshop” Abstract: This workshop brought together about 50 researchers whose work was considered by the international organisers to cover highlights in current activities in vertex detectors, tracking detectors and related issues such as radiation damage. Each attendee gave a talk, and reports ranged from how to maintain performance in the last months of life of the CDF tracker, near-term choice for the Insertable B Layer of ATLAS, and ideas for dramatically reducing material while enhancing performance of ATLAS and CMS tracking systems at the High Luminosity LHC (my contribution). The workshop retained its tradition of frank collegial discussion of all issues, which stimulated ideas for the solution of challenging problems. A clear outcome was the continued vibrancy of R&D in silicon detector systems, which should result in winning strategies in the campaign to move to yet higher luminosities and proximity to the interaction point at HL-LHC, SuperK, SuperB, ILC/CLIC and beyond.
