Wednesday 11 November 2009 Speaker: Prof. Steven Cowley (Head of Euratom/CCFE Fusion Association) Title: Fusion Power - Physics & Engineering Challenges Abstract: In a decade, the international fusion experiment ITER will start operating in the south of France. This historic experiment will generate up to 500 megawatts of fusion power and provide a proof of principle for fusion energy. There are challenging problems that must be solved to make fusion power a commercial option. I will outline the problems and efforts to find their solution. Central to these efforts is the MAST device at Culham which is establishing new ways to minimize the turbulent transport of heat and particles.
