Wednesday 11 March 2009 Speaker: Stuart Green (University Hospitals Birmingham) Title: Physics based techniques for the treatment of cancer Abstract: Physics-based techniques for cancer treatment are developing rapidly and are likely to remain an important part of the clinical scene for many years. This talk will set new treatment approaches into their appropriate clinical context where different categories of clinical disease require different treatment strategies. Recent developments in external beam therapies using beams of x-rays will be reviewed, and the additional potential particle therapy will be described. For disease which is spreading locally around the main tumour site, the role of binary therapies, especially Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT) will be explored. In both cases, the clinical applications will be set against research in Birmingham on particle therapy (as part of the LIBRA project) and the development of an accelerator neutron source for BNCT.
