Wednesday 10 December 2008 Speaker: Jim Hinton (U Leeds) Title: Ground-based gamma-ray astronomy and the CTA project Abstract: Over the last few years results from the HESS system of Cherenkov telescopes on a wide range of topics have demonstrated the potential of ground-based gamma-ray astronomy. The future of this field is now being planned - the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) project is a unified effort by European groups to build an instrument 10 times more sensitive than HESS. I will describe the plans and prospects for CTA in the context of the results from HESS and other TeV gamma-ray telescopes.
